Achieve Your Goals
Cost & Aid Quick Links
You pay for 8!
Current UCR undergraduates and active visiting undergraduates from other UC campuses only pay the per-unit fee for the first eight units.
This means that summer is an affordable option, including Pell and UCR grants available for qualified students.
Please note that Summer Sessions will not drop students from unpaid enrollments! If you enroll in a course and you later decide you don't want it, it is your responsibility to drop the course by the published drop deadline as listed at Dates & Deadlines. If you enroll in a course and you do not drop it by the published deadline, you will be billed for the course and you will receive a grade.
2024 Summer Sessions Costs & Fees
Summer Sessions offers classes in multiple sessions, enabling you to earn units in the timeframe that works best for you. Take the classes you need in one or multiple sessions.
Summer Sessions Per-Unit Fees
Undergraduate Students: $279 per-unit fee + $7 per-unit for tech fee[1]
Graduate Students: $374 per unit-fee + $5 per-unit for tech fee[2]
Mandatory Campus Fees
In addition to your per-unit fees, over the summer you will also pay the same mandatory campus fees you pay the rest of the year. Fees are charged based on the length of session you attend. The maximum referendum fee charged for summer will be no more than the 10 week rate.
Main Sessions:
Session | Undergraduate Fee[3] | Graduate Fee[4] |
---|---|---|
A (5 weeks) | $194.92 | $139.29 |
B (5 weeks) | $194.92 | $139.29 |
F (10 weeks) | $389.83 | $278.57 |
Session | Undergraduate Fee[3] | Graduate Fee[4] |
---|---|---|
C1 (3 weeks) | $116.95 | $83.57 |
C2 (3 weeks) | $116.95 | $83.57 |
C3 (3 weeks) | $116.95 | $83.57 |
Session | Undergraduate Fee[3] | Graduate Fee[4] |
---|---|---|
E (7 weeks) | $272.88 | $195.00 |
Use the Cost Estimator to estimate your summer fees, or use the following method: multiply the total unit value you plan to take by the per-unit fee, add the per-unit tech fee multiplied by the total number of units, then add the referendum fee for each session you plan to take.
*Note that for the per-unit fee, UC undergraduates pay for a max of 8 units and UC graduates pay for a max of 12 units. For non-UC visiting students, there is no cap.
For example:
UCR Undergrad taking a 4 unit course in session A: ($279 × 4 ) + ($7 × 4) + $194.92 = $1338.92
UCR Undergrad taking the 12 unit Org. Chem Series: ($279 × 8) + ($7 × 12) + $116.95 +$116.95+$116.95 = $2666.85
Fees are subject to change without notice at any time.
Some or all instruction for all or part of the summer sessions may be delivered remotely. Tuition and fees have been set regardless of the method of instruction, and will not be refunded in the event instruction occurs remotely for any part of the summer sessions. Figures for tuition and fees represent currently approved or proposed amounts and may not be final. Actual tuition and fees are subject to change by the University of California as determined to be necessary or appropriate. Final approved tuition and fee levels may differ from the amounts presented.

Summer Grant Eligibility for Undergraduate Students
If you are an undergraduate student, you may be eligible for grant funds.
- The Financial Aid Office will provide you with an estimate of summer grant and loan eligibility by the end of April.
- Official summer financial aid awards will be calculated based on your actual units enrolled for the summer term.
- The Financial Aid Office will begin processing actual summer awards during the first week of June.
- Summer Financial aid awards will be based on your official Student Aid Index (SAI) as of the date that your summer award is calculated. Your SAI may change if data reported on your FAFSA or California DREAM application changes as a result of verification.
Pell Grants
Students with Student Aid Indexes up to $6,656 may qualify for summer Pell Grants. The FAFSA application data will determine your Pell Grant eligibility. Awards are prorated (reduced) for enrollment in less than 12 units. Eligible students must enroll in a minimum of 6 units.
State Supplemental Summer Grants
Students with Student Aid Indexes between $6,000 and $15,000 who received Cal Grant awards in 2023-24 may qualify for State Supplemental Summer Grants up to $2,000. Eligible students must enroll in a minimum of 8 units.

Pell Grant disbursements are subject to reduction for part time enrollment in fewer than 12 units. Your Pell Grant award will be calculated based on your enrollment at the time that your summer financial aid offer is provided. Subsequent changes in your enrollment status may result in a revised Pell Grant award. Summer Sessions enrollment will be confirmed as of June 26, 2024. Your award may be cancelled if you drop to less than half time status (below 6 units). Note that if you drop courses you may have a balance that you will be responsible to pay for from personal resources.
Interested in Borrowing Summer Federal Direct Loan Funds?
Summer Federal Direct Loans are also available for students who are not grant eligible, graduate and teaching credential students, and grant eligible undergraduate students who would like to borrow loans to assist with summer living expenses.
If you decide to accept a summer Federal Direct Loan award:
- Be sure to follow the instructions to complete any required loan steps.
- Allow at least two weeks for your loan to be processed to ensure that your loan disbursement is available by the Summer Sessions fee payment deadline.
- Be advised that any Federal Direct Loan amount borrowed during summer may reduce the amount of Federal Direct Loan you are eligible to receive during any remaining terms for which you will enroll in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans
Parents of dependent undergraduate students may also apply for Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan funds to cover the difference between your grant awards and any Federal Direct student loan funds that you borrow. Additional information regarding the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan can be found on the Financial Aid Office website and at StudentAid.gov.
If your parent(s) want to borrow a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan, your parent borrower needs to complete two steps:
- Apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan online at StudentAid.gov and
- Complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan online at StudentAid.gov.
Eligible for Veterans' Dependent Educational Benefits?
Active UCR students and admitted freshman/transfers/readmits who receive the fee waiver during the regular academic year will also receive the fee waiver automatically in the summer.
- The amount of any Cal Vet Fee Waiver will be offset against the amount of Summer UCR Grant eligibility.
- Veterans' dependents who are visiting students from other UC campuses may use the veterans' dependents fee waiver while enrolled at UCR during the summer.
- Visiting students from other UC campuses will need to email a copy of their current authorization letter and a current proof of enrollment to the Summer Sessions office before the fee waiver can be applied. The per-unit tuition fee will be waived, but the Student Technology Fee (charged per unit), mandatory campus/referendum fees, and Course Materials and Services fee (as applicable) will still be assessed.
