Dear Summer Sessions students,

As you may already know, last Friday, 6/13, was the deadline to pay or get dropped from all summer courses.  While the system correctly dropped students who had not paid on time, it also accidentally dropped students who had already paid for their courses or who were awarded Financial Aid.  In response to this error, the computer programmers disabled GROWL for approximately 24 hours in order to make corrections without additional, simultaneous enrollments.  Just before GROWL was disabled, many students checked their accounts and re-enrolled themselves into classes.

 

As of this morning, the enrollments indicate that the computer programmers were successful in reversing the error for those students who were incorrectly dropped from their courses.  However, those of you who re-enrolled yourselves into classes before GROWL was disabled may now have duplicate enrollment or may be enrolled in the wrong Discussion and/or Laboratory section.

 

Please take a moment to login to your GROWL account to review your enrollments.  If you had paid for all of your classes prior to last Friday, your enrollments should be the same as what you had before June 13.  Please contact the Summer Sessions Office at 827-3044 if you believe that you were not correctly re-enrolled in your classes.  The Summer Sessions Office can review your Payment and Registration Audit Trail to confirm when you signed up and paid for classes.  If you add a new primary section to your current enrollment, you will be assessed a $50 Late Transaction Fee.

Summer financial aid applicants must complete and submit the online Summer Financial Aid Request form on GROWL no later than May 1, 2008.  Incoming Teaching Credential students (new admits) may apply for summer financial assistance on GROWL through June 30, 2008.  The Summer Financial Aid Request will be available on GROWL beginning on April 1, 2008.  You must also have completed a 2008-09 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 3, 2008 and submit all documents required to complete your financial aid application by May 1, 2008 in order to be considered for summer financial assistance.

Who is ELIGIBLE   |   Who is NOT ELIGIBLE   |   Summer Disbursements

The following categories of students are ELIGIBLE for summer financial assistance:

  • UC Riverside undergraduate students
  • Current Teaching Credential students and new Teaching Credential students who are admitted on a regular or conditional basis for fall quarter 2008 

Undergraduate students are required to enroll on a full-time basis (12 units minimum) for financial aid consideration. (Enrolled units for all sessions will be combined to determine your enrollment status.) An exception will be made for seniors who will graduate by the end of winter quarter 2009. Graduating seniors must enroll on at least a half-time basis (6 units minimum) for financial aid consideration.

Cross campus applicants (UCR students who plan to enroll at another UC campus during Summer Session 2008) must also meet these application deadlines and enrollment requirements.  This includes students who plan to enroll in summer travel study programs through other UC campuses.

  

Aid available to undergraduate students
  • Federal Pell Grants (with qualifying expected family contribution)
  • UC Riverside Grants for students with grant need
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loans for dependent students

Note: Students enrolled for all three quarters of the 2008-09 academic year in addition to summer are limited to the annual maximum award limits from the Pell Grant program. No additional Pell Grant is available for summer enrollment. For example, a student eligible for $4,731 in Pell Grant would get $1,183 per term for summer, fall, and winter terms, and $1,182 for spring term vs. $1,577 per term for fall, winter and spring.

Aid available to Teaching Credential students*
  • Federal Pell Grants (with qualifying expected family contribution)
  • Federal Direct Stafford Loans

*Note: Teaching Credential students who are required by their program to enroll in summer courses may qualify to receive federal aid by enrolling in 6 units or more. Teaching Credential students who are concurrently enrolled in the M.Ed. program are eligible for Federal Direct Stafford Loans only.

Teaching Credential students enrolled for all three quarters of the 2008-09 academic year in addition to summer are also limited to the annual maximum award limits from the Pell Grant and federal Stafford Loan programs. No additional aid is available for summer enrollment.

The following categories of students are NOT ELIGIBLE for summer financial assistance:

  • Part time students (see previous exceptions noted)
  • Graduate students (contact your graduate department about available graduate assistance funds)
  • New Teaching Credential students who are admitted on a provisional basis for fall quarter 2008

Summer UCDC, UC Sacramento, Education Abroad, and UCR Summer Travel Study participants may be eligible for Financial Aid but should NOT complete the Summer Financial Aid Request. The Financial Aid Office will be notified directly by your program of your summer enrollment. If you have completed your FAFSA application and submitted any required documents to the Financial Aid Office by our May 1, 2008 deadline, you will then be awarded any aid for which you may qualify.

Summer disbursements

Summer financial aid disbursements will begin on July 1, 2008.   Financial Aid refunds (for non-fee expenses) will not be available until after the first week of the summer session. Financial aid awarded to students who drop below 12 units (6 units for graduating seniors) is subject to revision and the student may be billed for any aid disbursed to pay fees or issued in a refund. Awards will be reduced or cancelled for students who never begin attendance in classes in the number of units or sessions reported on their summer aid application.

Students must have maintained satisfactory academic progress in order to be eligible for summer funding.
